Ecofemminismo in movimento
Talk by Federica Riva
Ecofeminism fights against uniqueness; it is not one thought but many, and above all, like everything alive, it is constantly changing. In its fifty years as a Western and urban phenomenon, ecofeminism has been transformed, open to differences, to different cultural approaches to female being and nature. To narrate part of this evolution, we will start with Chipko, a women’s movement against deforestation that began in the 1970s in a few Himalayan villages and which went on to become a global ecofeminist icon. The Western translation of Indian struggles has shown how even feminist thinking about nature is not without biases and cultural hierarchies to be overcome—a challenge to embrace in order to move on once more.
Federica Riva
In 1999, between Pavia and Utrecht (NL), Federica Riva was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy on Feminist Thought and a postgraduate master’s degree in Women’s Studies. Thanks to scholarships from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, CNR, a doctorate in cultural anthropology and subsequent research grant at the University of Milan Bicocca, she began a twenty-year collaboration with research centers, associations, NGOs, and social movements in India to document women’s struggles for the defense of the environment, biodiversity, and environments intended for subsistence of which, over the years, she has become a passionate and critical promotor. Women’s perspectives have become her take on the landscape, communal spaces, development models, and visions of the future.
